Muffy sat down at her computer in her office in main science and noticed she had several messages for her. She opened up the first one and it was request from Starfleet Medical for some clarification about the cure of infertility she had uncovered after that disastrous away team mission.
The question was what if it was the male who was infertile, did it also work on males. Muffy thought about it and then planned out research on the subject. She sent back that she didn’t know but give her a week and she would have an answer.
Another message from Starfleet Science asking her for clarification about her private wormhole. She had gone over this many times and had demonstrated it to a panel of the top scientific minds in Starfleet and answered all their questions then. She rolled her eyes when the question was one again asked her about how secure was the wormhole. The wormhole was only every active when the key was used. When it wasn’t in use, it wasn’t there. And the key was genetically marked for whoever was given access to the wormhole. So in simpler terms, it was the door to Narnia and only those who belonged in Narnia could get there, for everyone else, it was just a wardrobe to hold clothing. And the genetic marker couldn’t be stolen because it read the entire body of whoever held the key and if it didn’t match perfectly to the medical scans, the door wouldn’t open except to show clothing. She replied by once again reminding them of the built in security and told them or go through the recorded panel if they had other questions.
Finally, the last message was from her mother, asking if she were done putting her life on the line and when she was coming home to stay. Muffy had to answer this delicately because of how her family acted and believed.
“Mother, I have made a lifetime commitment to Starfleet. I will be home for a yearly visit as normal. However, I will not be coming home to live with you and Father again. As I have said before, I am sorry if this hurts you, but I have to follow my dream. Look at all the good I’ve already done. Give my love to Father and Richard and Rachel and of course you too.”
Muffy then stood up and went into her private lab and pulled out the research on the fertility cure with the idea of finding a male equivalent to the female cure. She pulled out the slides and got to work. In the back of her mind she heard the shift change and everyone saying goodbye or hello to her as the shift changed. However, her entire focus was on this line of research. She would find an answer, no matter what.
“Did she go home at all yesterday?” Her assistant department head asked one of the Alpha shift astrometrics specialists.
“No, she hasn’t even moved except to change out slides and write down notes on her padd.” Ensign Alyssa Marshon replied.
Lieutenant Jason Cavenaugh shook his head and tried again to get Muffy’s attention, but she didn’t even look up. “Lieutenant Cavenaugh, please do your job and let me do mine. I’m in the middle of some time sensitive research. Just let me be and continue on with your own research. Thank you.” Muffy’s voice was husky from lack of sleep
On the third day of Muffy doing nothing but the research, one of the Ensigns went to sickbay and told Toulaine what Muffy was doing. Toluene sighed. She really didn’t need this on top of all the physicals. She promised to come by when she had some time. Then she told them to make a plate of lasagna and to make sure it had a lot of garlic and cheese and to put it next to Muffy on the counter, being careful not to mess up any of the research and not say anything.
